The Innocence Mission and 16 Horsepower at The Troubadour

The Innocence Mission / Emmylou Harris / Daniel Lanois at Ventura Concert Theater

Emmylou Harris last Thursday at the Ventura Concert Theatre in Ventura, CA. the show was incredible! She had Darryl Johnson playing bass, footpedals and some percussion. Buddy Miller was doing a fairly good job at sounding like Daniel Lanios and um ….I forgot the drummers name…. anyway about 3/4 of the show has gone by and then she looks around and then says “let me introduce Daniel Lanois…” . I had to double take it! it was him! He came out strapped on his vintage Gibson Firebird and they broke into May This be Love. I was speechless, here he was my mentor. his stage presence was mindboggling! He ended up playing about six songs with her and then they ended up with Indian Red off of For the Beauty of Wynnona. His drop by was totally unexpected. There was no buzz about him playing so I just assumed that it was going to be just Emmylou.

Dogstar at The House of Blues

Tonight was Keanu Reeves with his band Dogstar at The House of Blues. Now, don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t normally go to a Keanu Reeves concert but I got to take three lovely ladies from work. Of course I have no chance of anything because all they’re talking about is Keanu Reeves. So I just hung out and enjoyed a night out in L.A. DeeAnn Schneider, Jennifer Bauer and some other random girl went and I drove them all up. Of course DeeAnn’s AOL name used to be Kianna.

Tori Amos at UC Irvine Bren Events Center

Elvis Costello at Irvine Meadows – Brutal Truth Tour

Heaven & Earth at El Toro Cinemas

I went and saw “Heaven & Earth” today. It’s the new film by Oliver Stone and the third in the loose trilogy of Platoon & Born on the Fourth of July. It’s pretty good but it will be empty handed at the Oscars. It’s not nearly the movie the other two are. The cinematography, score, acting, and story are all great but it just doesn’t come together. $3.75 matinee to get in, but a drink and some candy… $5.

3rd Street Promenade Santa Monica

I went to Santa Monica and Venice today and the weather was perfect. This is definitely where I would want to live, but oh the commute it would be. I saw the house that the used in The Real World Los Angeles on MTV. It’s empty. I picked up a chicken taco at Jodi Moronis for lunch and sat out by the Venice Boardwalk. At the basketball courts there are games going on every single minute a basket is free. If it’s a full court game and the play heads down to one side, people get out on the unused end and start shooting hoops. Then when the games comes back down their end they yell “clear” and get out of the way. Then the opposite thing happens at the other end. Talk about taking advantage of your time.

I then went to the Santa Monica Promenade. Never even heard of this place. Been to the pier a bunch of times but never even knew this place existed. The Parking costs $2.20 for some reason. Seems like an odd number. There was a video shoot for a band called Sun 60 going on at The Mayfair Theater. I doubt I’ll ever hear of them. The Promenade’s kinda nice and it looks like Christmas because all the trees are strung with lights.

The New Guy

This “New Guy” memo went out today from LaMar. I sound so important. Not. Well, it’s a start. Actually I thought it was a joke at first and that he had only put the memo on my desk to make it seem like everyone got it. Low self esteem at work with those thoughts. Anyway, it was nice even though I hate any kind of fanfare.

First Day at Advanstar Communications

I started my new job at Advanstar today and had to fill out a pile of papers. At first they were thinking I would come in as a freelancer. What?! When did this come about? I refused to start work without becoming an employee of the company. Frank Molstad disappeared for about half an hour and then came back and told me to sign the papers. Where they got the idea I agreed to that I have no idea. First hiccup.

Everyone seems nice and fairly relaxed (unlike Omnipage). The only thing I got back from the pile of papers was this summary of my benefits. I didn’t really do much work today, but I met a lot of people and of course I don’t remember a single name. I finally met Karen who I’ve talked to on the phone for the last six months but had never seen her. I start at 8:30 and get an hour for lunch and off at 5:00… we’ll see.

New Years at the Cabin

The first thing I did this year was toot this horn. New Years Eve/Day at midnight. A big group of us went to the cabin; Jennifer, Tom, George, Meg, Chris Gonzalas, Michelle, Kim, Marlene, Mitch, Andrea, Steve, Guy, and some other guy who stayed one night. I’ve never seen that many people sleep over in the cabin! As soon as New Years hit everyone grabbed their pillows and crashed.

This morning we all (some) went skiing at Snow Summit. The conditions were great but we were all so tired we quit at 1:00pm and got $15.00 vouchers to come back on another day. Tonight we ate chinese food from Pong’s and watched “The Princess Bride” and “Groundhog Day”.

Human Drama at The Troubadour

Spent the day in Los Angeles with Judy. Shopping, seeing Jurassic Park, and finally going to The Troubadour for Human Drama.

George Clinton & The P-Funk All Stars at UC Irvine Crawford Hall

Went with Judy to this show and met up with some of her friends. Heard the joke, “Two men walk into a bar and one looks at the other and says, “Oh, you didn’t see it either?”
